Security Alert – U.S. Embassy, Islamabad

Location:  Pakistan

Event:  The Islamic religious month of Muharram is expected to begin on August 20, subject to the sighting of the moon.  There will reportedly be approximately 177 religious processions taking place in Islamabad during the month of Muharram.  The eighth through the eleventh days of Muharram are expected to be the peak days for processions in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.   Major processions in Islamabad will reportedly be held on August 27, 28, and 30, while in Rawalpindi, the major procession will reportedly be organized on August 29.  During this period, U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Islamabad and Rawalpindi can expect frequent traffic disruptions and road closures to accommodate religious processions and increased police presence as well as partial suspension of cellular service in and around procession routes.  There have been incidents of violent confrontations in past processions.  Embassy operations are normal.

  2. Monitor local media for updates
  3. Be aware of your surroundings
  4. Enroll in Safe Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates
